Preheat the oven to 190C/375F/Gas mark 5
Cream together the sugar, buttermilk, butter and vanilla. Stir in remaining ingredients. Mix thoroughly. Shape the dough into 1 inch balls. Place about 3 inches apart on ungreased baking trays and flatten slightly. Bake until golden brown, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from baking trays immediately to a cooling rack. Makes about 7 dozen.
