Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/gas mark 4
Use a 900g/2 lb loaf tin.
Sieve together the flours, baking powder and mixed spice. Cream the margarine, sugar and golden syrup together. Mash the banana and add to the margarine mixture along with the dates, sieved flour and 6 tbs. of water. Beat the mixture into a smooth dough and then place into the loaf tin. Bake for 1-1 1/2 hours. Test with a warm knife. Turn out to cool on a wire rack.
